‘The Odyssey’ Slays ‘Jurassic World’ To Become Universal’s Highest-Grossing Movie Ever At Global Box Office With $1.68 Billion – Copy

By the end of this weekend, The Odyssey will have crushed the ultimate record, becoming Universal‘s highest-grossing movie at the global box office with $1.684 billion.

The pic will sail above Universal’s previous record-breaker, 2015’s Jurassic World, which ended its run at $1.677 billion.

By Sunday, The Odyssey will count $601.2M million domestic and $1.083 billion international, becoming the 12th highest-grossing film ever and the third-biggest non-franchise title of all time.

The Odyssey experienced an amazing 6.39x multiple at the global box office and returned to the No. 1 position globally in its eighth weekend, dropping only 9% domestically.

As we’ve reported, The Odyssey quite some time ago became Christopher Nolan’s highest-grossing movie of his career, both domestically (clicking past The Dark Knight‘s $534.9M) and worldwide ($1.085B).

“What Chris and Emma [Thomas] have created will go down as one of the most ambitious and brilliantly executed films in cinematic history. A generational event that galvanizes moviegoing itself,” said Donna Langley, chairman of NBCUniversal Entertainment.

Among the records that The Odyssey has broken:

Opening

  • Biggest opening for director Christopher Nolan ahead of The Dark Knight Rises internationally and globally ($139.6M international, $264.1M worldwide)
  • Biggest opening weekend for Imax 70MM domestically ($6.3M)
  • Biggest Universal R-rated opening weekend domestically ($123.5M)

  • First non-sequel and non-remake to gross over $1 billion internationally since 2009

In addition to this global milestone, The Odyssey is also the highest-grossing Universal Pictures film of all time in 45 international markets including Australia, France, Italy, India and Korea. The Odyssey remains the second-highest grossing Universal film domestically behind Jurassic World ($653.4M).

Universal continues to lead all major studios with more than $4.92 billion to date. The studio was the first to cross $4 billion at the global box office this year and the first to cross $3 billion at the international box office.
