Max Verstappen, in the Red Bull-Ford, finished second, 4.351 seconds behind the winner.

Lando Norris, who led the opening stages, was caught out by the timing of a Virtual Safety Car period. He had just passed the pit lane entrance when it began but recovered to finish third, 5.089 seconds behind the winner.

Antonelli took his second win in the past week and extended his lead in the Drivers’ Championship to 81 points over George Russell.

It was Antonelli’s eighth win of the season. Verstappen took his 133rd podium finish. Mercedes tied Ferrari for the most wins by an engine manufacturer, with 251.

Charles Leclerc (29.116s), in his Ferrari, finished fourth, followed by Russell (29.829s) in the second Mercedes in fifth. Liam Lawson (1m26.746s), in the second Red Bull, was sixth, and Franco Colapinto (1m34.281s), in the Alpine-Mercedes, was seventh, his best career finish. Oscar Piastri (1m35.839s), in the second McLaren, was eighth, Arvid Lindblad (1 lap), in the Racing Bulls-Ford, was ninth, and Nico Hulkenberg, in the Audi, was tenth, taking the final point.

Before the race, the weather is hot, and there are many unknowns concerning tires, traffic and strategy.

Norris is on pole with Antonelli alongside. Verstappen and Hamilton fill row two, Leclerc and Russell are on row three, and Piastri and Lawson are on row four, with Colapinto and Lindblad rounding out the top ten.

Norris and Antonelli start on medium tires, while Verstappen and Hamilton start on softs. Leclerc, Russell and Piastri are all on hard tires.

At the appointed time, the drivers set off on the formation lap and line up on the grid. The lights go out, and Norris takes the lead. Antonelli and Verstappen run wide and cut the first corner. Verstappen takes second ahead of Antonelli, Hamilton and Leclerc.

Russell and Piastri make contact.

Hamilton says over the radio that Verstappen needs to give the position back.

On lap 2, Norris leads Verstappen, Antonelli, Hamilton, Leclerc, Russell, Colapinto, Lawson, Lindblad and Piastri.

Hamilton says the team needs to check the rear of his car: “I might have hit the wall.”

On lap 3, Norris leads by 1.9 seconds.

Red Bull tells Verstappen to let Hamilton through, which means letting Antonelli through as well. Verstappen does so on lap 4.

Hamilton says he is having brake problems and that his pedal is going long.

Verstappen passes Hamilton for third.

On lap 5, Norris is leading Antonelli.

Leclerc passes Hamilton, who continues to drop down the field to 14th while struggling with his brakes.

Hamilton pits and retires his Ferrari.

On lap 7, Norris leads Antonelli by 4.6 seconds, with Verstappen 9.5 seconds behind Norris, followed by Leclerc (11.6s), Russell (13.4s), Colapinto (21.2s), Lawson (22.2s) and Lindblad (23.2s) in eighth.

On lap 9, Norris sets the fastest lap at 1m39.343s and improves it on lap 10 with a 1m39.122s.

Lawson passes Colapinto for sixth.

On lap 11, Norris is leading Antonelli by 5.8 seconds and running about half a second per lap faster.

Piastri continues in ninth behind Lindblad with a damaged front wing.

Norris’s and Antonelli’s medium tires are starting to grain.

On lap 14, Stroll comes to a stop in a runoff area.

The Virtual Safety Car is deployed.

Antonelli, Verstappen and Russell pit, along with many other drivers. Norris misses his chance because he has just passed the pit lane entrance.

Under the VSC, Norris leads Leclerc, with neither having pitted. Antonelli and Verstappen are on hard tires, while Russell is on mediums.

Norris decides to pit on the next lap, but his timing is wrong again: the brief Virtual Safety Car period ends as he enters the pit lane.

Norris takes on hard tires and rejoins in fifth place.

On lap 16, Leclerc, yet to pit, leads Antonelli (1.7s), Verstappen (8.4s), Russell (11.2s), Norris (17.3s), Lawson (23.2s), Piastri (34.9s), Gasly (39.6s), Bortoleto (41.5s) and Colapinto (45.6s) in tenth.

Antonelli sets the fastest lap at 1m37.477s.

Russell is on mediums and Antonelli is on hards. Antonelli’s engineer is unsure whether the hard tires will last to the finish and warns that he will need to pit again if he does not manage them carefully.

On lap 20, Leclerc leads Antonelli by one second, followed by Verstappen (8.2s), Russell (11.7s), Norris (15.4s), Lawson (26.5s), Piastri (37.7s), Gasly (44.7s), Bortoleto (47.7s) and Colapinto (51.8s) in tenth place.

Sainz is handed a five-second penalty for his earlier collision with Alonso.

Leclerc leads, with Lawson, Piastri, Gasly and Bortoleto in sixth through ninth. All five have yet to pit.

Antonelli says the team needs to check the car: “It feels weird.” Leclerc leads Antonelli by 3.0 seconds.

Leclerc is looking to run a one-stop strategy.

Antonelli has two track limits violations, and his engineer warns him to keep it clean.

On lap 28, Norris has closed to within a second of fourth-placed Russell.

On lap 29, Russell pits from fourth for hard tires and rejoins in sixth, five seconds behind Lawson in fifth.

On lap 30, just past half distance, Leclerc leads Antonelli by 3.4 seconds, followed by Verstappen (8.8s), Norris (14.6s), Lawson (35.6s), Russell (39.3s), Piastri (42.5s), Gasly (53.4s), Bortoleto (59.6s) and Colapinto (1m04.4s) in tenth.

Alonso passes Perez for 17th.

On lap 33, Norris sets the fastest lap at 1m37.473s.

Perez pulls into the pits and retires.

On lap 34, Norris sets the fastest lap at 1m37.133s and runs fourth, 4.4 seconds behind Verstappen.

On lap 35, Lawson locks up, and Russell passes him for fifth place.

On lap 36, Norris sets the fastest lap at 1m37.029s and is 3.3 seconds behind Verstappen.

On lap 38, Norris sets the fastest lap at 1m36.897s and brushes the wall.

Leclerc is staying out in the hope of benefiting from a Safety Car period.

On lap 39, Norris sets the fastest lap at 1m36.857s, then improves again with a 1m36.796s.

On lap 40, Leclerc leads Antonelli by 2.8 seconds, followed by Verstappen (6.7s), Norris (7.8s), Russell (38.2s), Lawson (47.6s), Piastri (48.7s), Gasly (1m01.9s), Bortoleto (1m11.9s) and Colapinto (1m12.3s) in tenth place.

On lap 42, Norris closes to within a second of Verstappen.

On lap 43, Piastri pits from seventh for medium tires and rejoins in 11th.

On lap 44, Piastri passes Lindblad for tenth.

On lap 46, Lawson pits from sixth for medium tires and rejoins in seventh.

On lap 47, Russell sets the fastest lap at 1m36.082s.

On lap 48, Leclerc leads Antonelli by 1.0 second, with Verstappen 1.8 seconds behind Leclerc.

Leclerc then pits from the lead, switches from his worn hard tires to mediums and rejoins in fourth.

Russell sets the fastest lap at 1m35.758s.

On lap 50, Antonelli leads Verstappen by 1.4 seconds, with Norris (2.1s) in third.

Russell sets another fastest lap at 1m35.587s.

Gasly is in sixth place, still on hard tires and yet to pit.

On lap 52, with five laps remaining, Antonelli leads Verstappen by 2.5 seconds, followed by Norris (3.1s) in third.

Antonelli says he has brushed a wall but continues.

On lap 55, Verstappen and Norris thread their way through backmarkers.

On lap 56, Gasly makes his only stop, fitting soft tires and rejoining in 12th.

At the checkered flag, Antonelli wins ahead of Verstappen and Norris.

Verstappen is noted for previously leaving the track and gaining an advantage, but the stewards quickly say that no further action will be taken.

Gasly is given a five-second penalty for speeding in the pits and drops to 13th place.
